Beauty Secrets – At home DIY face masks

by Emma W.R. on April 6, 2016

Like me, you are probably a very busy mom. Multi-tasking is your specialty but you may not always find the time to pamper yourself. I’ve come up with a few ways to treat your stressed skin to relaxation. It only takes a few minutes and will work with any skin type. Let’s raid the kitchen and find these easy ingredients to a better you.

Coffee & Cocoa Facial Mask

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Use coffee grounds and cocoa powder to brighten a dull complexion and decrease puffiness in your face. Tailor this recipe for your own skin type. Excellent for dry, oily and dehydrated skin.

  • 4 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 Tbsp. finely ground coffee beans or used coffee grounds
  • 8 Tbsp. dairy product. Choose either heavy cream, whole milk or unflavored yogurt.
  • 2 Tbsp. honey (for dry skin) or lemon juice (for oily skin)

Mix coffee and cocoa powder in a bowl. Add the dairy product and stir until a smooth paste forms. Now you can add the honey and/or lemon juice. Leave on for 15 minutes and wash off with warm water and a washcloth.

Pumpkin Pulp Facial Mask

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Pumpkin is loaded with natural exfoliating acids and antioxidants. It also calms breakouts and softens the appearance of fine lines and sun damage.

  • ½ cup of fresh pumpkin pulp
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons almond milk (for dry skin) or honey (for oily skin)
  • 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar or cranberry juice

Puree the pumpkin pulp into a thick paste then add your eggs. Add the almond milk or vinegar and mix well. Apply mask, leaving it on for 15-20 minutes depending on your skin sensitivity. Rinse with cool water and moisturize as usual.

Cat Litter Clay Facial Mask

Prep Time: 5 minutes

This one sounds strange but it actually works. Cat litter is made of the same ingredients as special clays found in $100 spa facials.

  • 1 bag of cat litter (unscented)
  • Water
  • A few drops of your favorite essential oil (to feel less like cat litter)

Add water to litter and mix well to a paste consistency. Apply mask to face and allow to dry. Wash off after 15 minutes with warm water.

Moisturizing Avocado Face Mask

Prep Time: 3 minutes

This mask heals, moisturizes and balances the pH of the skin.

  • 1 Ripe Avocado
  • 1 Egg White
  • 1 Teaspoon Lemon Juice

Mix all the ingredients together well. Scoop one tablespoon at a time and apply evenly on clean face, avoiding the eye area. Let dry for about 30 minutes. Rinse face thoroughly with warm water.

Banana Facial Mask

Prep Time: 5 minutes

This banana mask helps to sooth dry, irritated skin. Honey is beneficial in so many ways and helps replenish the skin from every day sun exposure. The cinnamon fights blemishes and opens the pores.

  • ½ banana
  • 2 Tablespoons of raw honey
  • ½ Teaspoon of cinnamon

Begin by mashing the half banana in a bowl with a wooden spoon. Once you have created a consistent texture, mix in the honey and cinnamon. Apply mask and leave on for 30 minutes. Rinse with a simple cleanser and water.

Egg Whites/Yogurt/Oatmeal

Prep Time: 2 minutes

Simple items such as Egg Whites and Yogurt can soothe your tired skin. It’s quick, easy and great for an instant lift.

  • 2 Egg Whites
  • 1 container of yogurt (unsweetened)
  • 1 container of oatmeal

Separate Egg Whites and add 2 tablespoons of yogurt into a bowl. Mix and apply to face. Do the same instead using oatmeal. Add a drop of honey for more moisture. Leave on for 10 minutes then rinse off with warm water.

These sound like pretty good ideas for face masks! I might have to give the kitty litter one a pass though lol

The banana one seems like it would be easy and refreshing. I could use a facial, especially for the price of DIY! 😉

The coffee and cocoa one sounds like it would taste good too! haha!

These would be fun ideas for my daughter’s sleepover with her friends.

I have all the ingedients for the egg white mask at home. Sounds like a nice little treat for myself when I get home after what has been an incredibly stressful day at work today!!

I’ve definitely tried the coffee and cocoa mask before, but I think it had sugar in it as well and the sugar granules helped exfoliate the skin!

These all sound super easy and do-able! I’m not too sure about the cat litter one though…
