Fun Christmas Decorating Ideas For The House

by Emma W.R. on November 1, 2013

I consider myself a fairly modern girl. I’m 30ish and love decorating for the holidays. This year, break the traditional look and try a fresh approach to Christmas. I admit I am not one blessed in the art of crocheting or knitting, but I can fake it! I know you have a basket of old yarn lying around the house. Go grab it and let’s put it to use. With a wire hanger, a few glass ornaments and all that yarn, you can make a contemporary wreath with just a hot glue gun. No sewing required!

Instead of buying garland, make your own. Try stringing buttons, wine corks or shapes cut out of paper. You can even make garland out of your photo Christmas cards! Choose more modern colors like baby blue, pink and white. Try soft olive greens and gold. Make a centerpiece of sleek trees by wrapping string around a triangular object. Give that cosmopolitan feel with large and luscious bows. Get stylish with your bad self!

Invite the girls over and have a night of fun. You can all be fabulous and make handmade décor. Be sure to re-use those wine bottle corks!

I have done something similiar with old greeting card covers. If you have children, this is something that’s also great to get them involved in and get their creative juices flowing.

My friends and I are planning a craft night where we will make crafts to decorate the Christmas tree at a nursing home in town. These are good suggestions – but we need more so please keep them coming.

Rita – craft night sounds like a great idea. You make stuff for the home and get family time – double win!

My sisters and I started a craft night. Once a month we get together and make all sorts of crafts. Last month we made Christmas balls – styrofoam ball forms that we then stick gold thumb tacks all around. It doesn’t sound pretty but the end result is awesome. You can also do this with silver thumb tacks for a nice contrast – Silver and Gold. I look forward to more of your decorating/craft ideas.

Great suggestion to plan a Girl’s Nite and make Christmas decorations. I am DEFINATELY going to do this. We will have quite a few wine corks to use 😉

I love the garland idea. I always wonder what to do with the old photo Christmas cards I receive. This is a great way to use them. Such a cheerful decoration. Love it!
