Game Ideas for Kids at a Christmas Party

by Emma W.R. on December 18, 2015

Party! Party! Party!  Doesn’t have the same meaning as it did ten years ago, does it?  Remember the days when you were hosting a Christmas party and the only worry was what drinks and appetizers you would serve?  Now, you have the added responsibility as the host is figure out how to keep the kids occupied and having fun while the adults still manage to have their own fun.  If your budget allows, try to hire a teenager to help out or recruit an older child to run the show.

RudolfPin the Nose on Rudolph

Pin the tail on the donkey has been a kids’ game around for decades.  I like to mix it up and keep the holiday theme with this fun reindeer.  I have my children help me prepare by cutting out red circles out of construction paper.

stockingAnother great game idea for kids at a Christmas party is Christmas Stocking Mystery.  You fill a stocking with a variety of different holiday themed prizes such as a Santa Claus pencils, Frosty shaped erasers, Rudolph noses bouncy balls, etc.  The kids will reach in without looking and try to guess the item by feel.  Wait until you hear what some of the guesses your kids will come up with.

How about a twist on Hot Potato?  We tried this and it was a smash.  The Christmas Carols were playing as the Pass the Candy Cane.  When the music stops, the child holding the candy cane is out but get s to keep the candy cane.  Even when they lose, they win!

One last game idea for kids at a Christmas party that I even like to participate in is the Best Decorated Cookie.  It is a game where everybody wins.  I bake sugar cookies ahead of time and provide different color frosting, gumdrops, M&M’s, sprinkles and whatever else I can think of.

Having a Christmas party can be a success with good planning.  Know your guests and what keeps them occupied.  People say, “Kids will be kids” but let’s change that to “Hhappy kids will be happy parents.”

I used the pin the nose on Rudolph idea this year for my classroom party. I’m a teacher and the kids had a blast! Easy game too.
