Things to Do on Memorial Day Weekend

by Emma W.R. on May 25, 2016

Memorial Day began as a day to honor those who have died in our nation’s service. It is also the official kickoff to summer. Growing up in the Garden State, I found we have many traditions celebrated right here in New Jersey. Here are a few ways to bring in the summer and enjoy yourself Jersey style.

New Jersey is known for its sandy beaches, boardwalk amusement piers, fishing, outdoor concerts, fireworks, and more. Why not head to the beach or as we say “down the shore” to enjoy these outdoor activities.

  • Hop in the car and drive to Wildwood, Seaside Hieights or Point Pleasant for its amusement parks, beaches and mouth-watering food.
  • Take the kids and spend the day at the Land of Make Believe, Wild West City or Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson. NJ.
  • Suit up for a Waterpark, Aquarium or a round of mini-golf.
  • Take a trip down to Atlantic City for its casino’s, boardwalk, shops and concerts.

NJ is home to some great hiking outings that include hikes over forested trails, waterfalls, ridges, and the Appalachian Trail, with awesome views of the Delaware Water Gap, waterfalls, valleys and the NYC skyline.

Spend the weekend camping or grilling on your BBQ in one of our beautful State Parks. Step out on an adventure into Wharton State Forest, The Pine Barrens or Kyack along the Delaware River.

  • Visit noteworthy Cape May and the oldest Lighthouse on the southernmost tip of NJ.
  • Learn how to fly a kite at the beach and join the NJ Kite Enthusiasts along South Jersey beaches.
  • Drop in the historic Stone Pony to hear a rock and roll band play in Asbury Park.
  • Check out your local town’s Parade, Food Festival, Street Fair or Carnival.

New Jersey has many wonderful and fun ways to spend any holiday. I have
very fond memories of my time spent across this state. Get out there and explore this great state with your family for this Memorial Day weekend. Share your traditions for this holiday weekend with us.

Stay home, in the A/C and enjoy not sitting in MDW traffic!

I am late on reading this, but great tips. Still stuff that applies all summer.

The weather was bad for me the MDW. Ended up stuck indoors with netflix.

We do day trips to the Jersey Shore all summer long. I’m trying to make a point of visiting beaches I’ve never been to before and perhaps I can one day cross them all off my list!

There is nothing like the Jersey Shore during the summer! I spent most of my summer on the beaches of Lavallette growing up.
