Lose the Cold Weather Blues – Have a Winter Luau

by Emma W.R. on January 28, 2015

Now that the craziness of the holidays is over and the thrill of a new year has come and gone, people tend to be “ho-hum” between the months of January through March. The weather is cold and snowy, and let’s face it, people’s moods tend to change around this frigid time. I’ve got the cure to lose the cold weather blues though… have a Winter luau!

Just think how excited your friends and family will be to attend a gathering now that there’s a lull in seasonal celebrations. It’ll give people a fun event to look forward to until the next holiday comes up. (Let’s face it, not everyone celebrates Valentine’s Day!) Have your guests dress in summer clothes, get some leis, put umbrellas in your drinks and have a ball! Heck, you could even make a grass skirt table cloth, sprinkle some sand around your appetizer table and place some seashells there too!

A yummy and super easy dessert you can make is beach cupcakes. Use whatever cupcake and icing recipe you like. The trick here is to add blue food coloring to the icing, so that it looks like water.  You can roll half of the cupcake in graham cracker crumbs to look like sand if you’d like. Add one of those drink umbrellas and a candy beach towel (cut up strips of fruit roll-ups work great). You could even put a Teddy Graham cracker on top of the cupcake to look like they’re laying out getting a tan.

There’s so many ways to get creative with this theme, but the key is décor. If you can’t be in the warm weather, why not just pretend you are? Go ahead and party away those cold weather blues!

I made these and added teddy grahams as the “people.” Put some in the water in gummy life savers (looked like floats) and some on pieces of fruit roll ups (looked liked they were laying out in the sun). BIG HIT!

After the winter we had I can’t wait to have a party. The luau theme is great, love the cupcakes planning to decorate them with anything that reminds me of the beach like shells and tiny flip flops. Thanks for the great ideas.

Read this article about having a party to take away the winter blues, well it’s now April, weather still feels like winter, barely a sign of spring and flowers, what’s going on?? Bring on the winter blues party we need it!!

What a great idea to beat the winter blues! The cupcake is an adorable idea that I will have to remember for my next party.

Thanks for idea! I’ve decided a luau is the perfect cure for the misery of February. Definitely going to serve these adorable cupcakes and have a few trays of the moldable sand I’ve seen all over lately. The “kids” will love playing with it.

I used your idea and made a tropical sheet cake, adding waves and gummy fish to the water. My 7 year old loved it for his January birthday. It was fun breaking out the summer clothes again – a few even wore flip-flops. A short but delightful departure from winter.

These are adorable! I know the idea is for a winter luau, but my daughter’s birthday is in August and these would be perfect for a pool party. Bookmarked!
