Creative Themes for Your Annual Family Christmas Card

by Emma W.R. on November 30, 2016

For years, I dragged my kids to the local photo shop. They sat in front of the painted background of a tree or snowman in their fancy Christmas outfits and were forced to smile for the camera.  Have you ever done this exhausting activity?  From all the cards I receive, I would say many of you have tried this at least once.  The kids hated it and I would end up with more stress than warranted.  I needed a change.

The first year, we decided to go back to what we love:  The Beach.  We took our pictures early on our favorite sandy shore.1

It was a perfect theme for our annual family Christmas card because everyone who knows us knows that if the weather makes it possible, you can find us there.  We even added a ‘sand snowman’ to our picture.

As the kids got older, they were all into different sports so I decided to take that route.  There were no arguments when it came time to snap the perfect annual family Christmas card.  One son wore his football uniform, the other hugged his surfboard and my daughter went full out with her soccer uniform, shin pads and cleats.  It showed them off in their best elements.2

This was my husband’s favorite theme for our annual family Christmas card.  He is a cartoon and comic book junkie and the boys are right with him.  This one year, we decided to all dress up like our favorite superhero and wish our family members a “Super Holiday.”

Now, every year I try to come up with some new creation and my family and friends look forward to seeing what different craziness they will see when they open up our Christmas card.  For this year, I am thinking dressing up like our favorite fairy tale or movie characters.  What do you think?

We’re moving into a new home this year so we’ll take a family photo on the front steps to use on our Christmas Card.

Loved the ‘sandman’ and the super hero idea was great! So unique and fun, a tradition to look forward to! I would love to do this when I have kids, I just hope coming up with an idea wouldn’t get stressful. Sounds like your family looks forward to it and I’d hate to disappoint!

The beach is a great idea! I’d love to get a card with some sand and sunshine while I’m sitting home in the cold. Gives me hope for Summer!

We did a Disney theme this year. We all dressed at the princes and princesses. Really cute!

We did a batman, robin and cat woman theme this year. It was easy because we took it while the kids were dressed up for Halloween – just tossed in Santa hats for the photo.

That sandcastle snowman is a very creative idea. If I can actually remember it over the summer and get the kids to agree I might borrow the idea.

When I was growing up my mom dragged us to Sears to get pictures taken for Christmas. I dreaded it every year. It was torture! I wish we took fun photos like these!

We actually did an Incredibles themed card a few years ago. It was a ton of fun!

Too bad my kids don’t fit in the Incredibles costumes from Halloween two years ago. I could have done that as well! Their favorite movie to this day!

My sons (and husband!) would have so much fun with a superhero card. I just might surprise them and do that this year. It might be the only way to get them all to take a good photo haha!

The beach one is such a cute and original idea! I guess you need to really be thinking ahead of time about your cards unless you live in a warm climate.
