Best Outdoor Activities to do in the Fall

by Emma W.R. on September 21, 2016

Fall is my favorite time of the year.  Here in New Jersey, the weather is starting to change.  We have a crispness in the air making it the best time for outdoor activities.  The kids are happy to explore without the whining of the heat and feeling sweaty or complaining about the freezing temperatures of the winter.  Fall is the perfect time for us to get outside in the fresh air and experience the fun of New Jersey.

One of my families favorite outdoor activities in the fall is to visit a local farm for the day.  We enjoy picking apples, choosing the perfectly orange pumpkins and taking a hay ride throught the fields.  Our local farm always has apple cider and freshly baked apple cider donuts for us to splurge on after the trip.  I recommend that every family takes a day at a farm to explore and enjoy the local crops.

Another great outdoor fall activity we try to experience as a family is horseback riding.  The temperatures during fall is perfect for this.  The kids get a kick out of this.  It is not something we get to do often.  Our local ranch allows the kids to feed the horses carrots before and after their rides.  Try it.2

Sure my kids are like all others and would enjoy sitting in front of the computer, Xbox or other electronic device, but I feel that we need to get outdoors when the weather is so great.  My husband and I get the kids involved and pack a picnic and take it to a nearby hiking trail.  There we explore the wilderness, take in a waterfall or mountain animals, then break out lunch on the mountain top.  Talk about a great outdoor activity.  The kids learn so much while having a ball.

If all this seems like too much, try going back to basics.  Why not just head out to the park?  I make sure I have the frisbee, baseball and gloves and soccer ball.  This works for us.  Grab the toys that your famiily likes most.  Getting out side is the best thing you do for your kids.  Enjoy fall!

Going to local farms is so underrated. It’s amazing to go and pick your own food and the farmers market atmosphere is so homey.

I like to visit Sleepy Hollow and the surrounding area in the fall. They sure know how to do Halloween there. It is also beautiful just taking in the scenery and Fall colors. One of my favorite things to do!

My kids want to go on a horse so bad. I’m too afraid because I fell off once so I am hoping they lose interest.

Fall is my favorite season, the air is so crisp and refreshing. I have grandchildren now and started them on the same traditions of pumpkin picking, hay rides and apple pies

Apple picking is the most fun during the Fall. Picked enough to share with my neighbours.

Sweater weather! Definitely my favorite season. My kids and I always enjoy visiting a farm for pumpkin picking. I’ve yet to go horseback riding so that might just be the highlight of this fall’s outings.

Let the Fall fun begin. Love it when it feels like the a/c is on full blast, outside. Any activity that gets me out in the Fall air is ok by me.

Finally feels like Fall. Time for hot chocolate, scary movies and visits to haunted farms on the weekend.

I always loved playing outside as a kid and shudder to think its no longer the norm. A good stick is the best toy IMO, play with it as a staff or sword depending on playmates…just get them kids outside, good for the immune system and imagination.

I love spending time with my family and going apple picking on the farm, is our favorite activity together. Fall on the farm is so exciting and full of activities. Going on hay rides, horseback riding and visiting the petting zoo is part of our farm ritual.

The best thing about fall is decorating outside for the holidays. You can put up some scary figures or cute things, like pumpkins and lights for Halloween. When Thanksgiving comes along you can switch to a wreath on the door, pilgrim or Indian displays or even dried corn. This is the best way to get your family all together.

Delicious Orchards in Colts Neck, NJ is an amazing place to go shop and look around for this time of year.

I agree there’s no time like fall. A sweater or light jacket and your favorite hat is all you need to get out and enjoy the fall activities. One of my favorite is apple picking, good fun and fruit is always a plus.

I prefer apple picking in the fall myself. Many farms also have cider, apple pies and freshly made donuts. They are so much better than the ones you pick up at those chain stores. They even have hayrides! Many places here in the Northeast also have pumpkin picking, which I’ve never tried but I hear it’s another great activity to do with the kiddos.

Fall is a great time of year, especially when the leaves start turning colors. The weather in most states is gorgeous, so everyone has the opportunity to do fun outdoor activities. I like to go pick apples and look for pumpkins at the farms. You can enjoy a day at the park or even go horseback riding. These are things that are too hot for the summer.

I love the Fall. It really is the best season for outdoor activities. I love to pack a lunch and take my kids to the zoo or park. Now that they’re a bit older my husband and I have started taking them hiking. Nothing strenuous- just a nice walk on a marked trail.

The best activity in the fall is getting ready for Halloween. It’s a lot of fun deciding what you want to dress up as, as well as starting to make the costume. We love, as a family to go outside and start decorating the house with all types of decorations, from scary witches and ghosts to pumpkins and lights.

The best outdoor activities for the fall is going apple and pumpkin picking. There are many farms that have this along with hayrides, drinking apple cider and some even have a variety of soups and baked goods. This is perfect for the crisp weather we have here in New Jersey.
